AI integration and technical constraints

Client Ask

“Help us demonstrate our commitment to improving diversity in clinical trials and ensure our message reaches affected communities”

Clinical Equality is dedicated to improving the representation of people of color in clinical trials. They wanted to strengthen their online presence to effectively communicate this mission.

This website continues to shine a light on the damaging impact that the lack of diversity in clinical trials has and underscores that it’s a critical issue that everyone has a stake in. The campaign launched in 2020 – with many influential partners bringing this conversation to some of the largest stages in the world – there’s still more work to be done, particularly as we look at the full burden, or cost, that a lack of diversity in clinical research has.

Our Approach

Tell the story of how lack of diversity in clinical trials affects healthcare outcomes through captivating design.

Our goal was to communicate the urgency, empathy, and importance of inclusive clinical trials. We aimed to make users feel informed and motivated to take action

Project Highlights

How did I lead this project to success?

Emotional Connection: We connected with the audience through stories and testimonials from affected individuals.

Simple & Clear Information: We provided detailed, easy-to-understand information about the importance of diversity in trials

Engaging Experience: We created a user-friendly, interactive experience to encourage engagement and participation.

Emotional Connection

Show users the real-world impact of inclusive clinical trials.

To protect privacy while making the stories relatable, we used AI to generate faces for the stories shared on the site. This approach allowed us to create engaging and realistic visuals without disclosing the identities of real individuals. The AI-generated faces helped users connect with the content on a personal level, fostering empathy and understanding of the importance of diversity in clinical trials.

How did we get here?

We posed the question of how we can leverage technology to depict real-life stories and data without disclosing patient identities. After meeting with leadership and engineering we tackled this question by creating 15 portrait images, created using generative AI to illustrate the number of ethnicities and racial groups that are excluded from clinical trials. This helps visitors empathize and digest stories while protecting patient privacy.

Simple & clear information

Captivating metrics and clear hierarchy for users to digest.

We made information clear and digestible, helping users understand the impact of diverse clinical trials without feeling overwhelmed.

How did we get here?

Working hand in hand with the UX team to take it from from preliminary research on impactful layout and wireframes to several low-fidelity mockups. I was able to condense the initial layout to be more impactful through interactive animations that captures the user as they scroll through content.

Engaging Experience

Engage users in a supportive conversation.

We designed a gallery to further educate users through videos that can be sifted through easily. Two unique experiences were created to accommodate for both desktop and mobile platforms as the layout called for differences for accessibiliy purposes.

How did we get here?

The initial video player design, which allowed users to cycle through videos based on their preferences, posed challenges for engineers in managing the queue when videos were viewed out of order. I designed a solution to keep a consistent queue at the bottom, highlighting the current video without shuffling. This made the interface intuitive and easy to develop, ensuring a seamless user experience.

Results & Key Takeaways

Advancing Equity in Medical Research

Clinical Equality serves as a pivotal platform in addressing the systemic barriers that hinder people of color from participating in clinical trials. By raising awareness and providing accessible resources, the website empowers healthcare professionals, researchers, and the public to advocate for more inclusive practices in medical research. Through compelling visuals, informative content, and strategic calls to action, Clinical Equality not only educates but also inspires action towards achieving greater equity in accessing life-saving treatments.

Key Takeaways

Designing the platform was driven by key principles to maximize impact and usability. We prioritized a user-centered approach, ensuring the website addresses the challenges of clinical trial inequality effectively. By utilizing impactful imagery and compelling statistics, we aimed to engage users emotionally and intellectually, emphasizing the importance of inclusivity in medical research. Integrated resources and calls to action are seamlessly embedded throughout the website, empowering users to advocate for equitable healthcare practices. Accessibility was a core consideration, ensuring the website is easily navigable for all users. Through iterative design processes, we continuously refine the website based on user feedback and industry trends, demonstrating our commitment to fostering awareness and action towards achieving equity in clinical trials.
