Modega
Using Information Architecture to more effectively drive user acquisition and engagement while easing the tension between novice and power users
Problem
Many aspiring dancers juggle work and other responsibilities, leaving them with little time to find and enroll in dance classes. Unfortunately, most dance platforms are not user-friendly, requiring significant time and energy to locate essential information. This is a critical issue as experienced users seek out specific classes and instructors, while beginners need basic information about the studio. As a result, many dance studios struggle to strike a balance, leading to overwhelmed users and wasted resources.
Key Human Problem
As a growing dance studio with numerous offerings, creating a scalable digital platform was crucial. Every aspect of the website had to be designed with the ability to add new sections or features effortlessly, eliminating the need for engineering to add new design elements after project handoff.
Key Engineering Implications
Modega solely relied on Instagram to provide information for its users. However, a responsive website is vital to enhance the studio's legitimacy and searchability. A well-designed website provides power users with a centralized location to access information, including faculty, sessions, and booking options. Furthermore, novice users newer to dance, gain confidence in Modega's legitimacy through the website's design.
Key Business Implications
Solution
Data-driven design decisions led to a robust but concise homepage. It features a Studio introduction with eye-catching CTA buttons, a Meet the Faculty section highlighting popular teachers, and another that educates people about the dance community. For added convenience, a class schedule for quick access to bookings and a Studio rental section allows users to book studio space.
Information Architecture
I established a design system that incorporates scalable components, simplifying the development process while ensuring future-proofing of the product. The visual design reflects Modega's current physical studio design patterns, providing new users with a preview of the experience before attending a class. The consistent use of UI components, icons, and CTAs enables users to quickly acclimate to the platform and reduces the technical burden on the development team.
Visual Patterns
Exclusive navigation interactions for both mobile and desktop versions helped reduce time spent on tasks for both power and novice users. The ability to book on the homepage enables advanced users to book with ease and an optimized studio rental workflow provides users with a hassle-free direct line to studio rental managers.
Interaction Design
Impact
During usability tests, users were successful when performing multiple tasks from booking a class or finding a faculty member, to successfully renting a studio. Modega users can now access all of the studio's offerings from one centralized location, increasing searchability and enhancing the studio's credibility. The website's consistency across desktop and mobile devices simplifies booking and searching for power users while being able to explore Modega before visiting the space helps increase trust among novice users.
89% Task Completion Rate
I helped in creating and delivering a complete design that stakeholders were happy with while handing it off to engineering in a way that satisfied their needs. In an industry that lacks UI/UX, this platform helps Modega set itself apart from competitors by complying with best practices and creating an experience that all types of users can enjoy. From design to actual implementation, we built a process that’s scalable and cost-effective.
